            Practice  of  different  samples  fabric/yarn  for  different  bleaching  powder.
            Hydrogen peroxide and sodium chlorite
            Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
            •  bleaching the wool yarn, fabric with hydrogen peroxide
            •  bleaching the cotton yarn, fabric with sodium chlorite.


              Requirements
               Tools/equipment’s/Instruments
               •  Gas stove                       - 1 No.         •  Sodium hydroxide(caustic soda)    - as reqd.
               •  Stainless steel beaker          - 1 No.         •  Lab thermometer                   - 1 No.
               •  Acetic acid                     - as reqd.      •  Glass /metal stirring rods        - 1 No.
               •  Formic acid                     - as reqd.      •  Rubber Gloves.(disposable)        - 1 Set.
               •  Hydrogen peroxide               - as reqd.      Materials
               •  Sodium chlorite                 - as reqd.
               •  Sodium silicate                 - as reqd.      •  Wool, cotton yarn hanks        - as reqd.
               •  Sodium bisulfite (NaHSO )       - as reqd.      •  Wool and cotton fabric         - as reqd.

            PROCEDURE


            TASK 1: Bleaching of wool yarn & fabric with hydrogen peroxide
            1  Fill a clean container with warm water (35-45°C).  5  Maintain the  temperature at  45-50°C (higher
                                                                    temperatures can damage the wool).
            2  Slowly add 3-5% hydrogen peroxide  (H O ) while

               stirring gently.                                   6  Keep the yarn in the solution for 1-2 hours, stirring
                                                                    occasionally for even bleaching.
            3  Then adjust the pH to 8.5-9.0 using sodium silicate
               (pH must be controlled to avoid fiber damage).     7  Then check the color of the wool.
